PMS and Menstrual Irregularities

A balanced monthly cycle is viewed as key to alleviating discomforting menstrual symptoms.  If there is disruption to the balance of the reproductive organs, or stagnation in the blood circulation through the pelvic region, women can experience a wide variety of gynecological conditions.  Many women suffer from pain, as cramps and headaches, heavy bleeding, and irritability.  Using an integrative approach that includes acupuncture, nutrition and lifestyle counseling, the monthly cycle can be normalized, blood circulation restored and the hormones brought into balance.

Fertility

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), fertility is viewed as a woman’s natural state from menarche up until before menopause.  The female body is meant to potentially conceive a child each time the ovaries release an egg.  In order for this to naturally occur, balance must exist among the organ systems, hormones and the Chi within a woman’s body.  Acupuncture and integrative medicine can optimize fertility by restoring the organ systems that are out of balance to support the hormones needed for conception and pregnancy to occur the way nature intended.

Pregnancy

Asian medicine views a normal pregnancy as balancing.  On one hand, the mother’s Chi and blood are diverted to support the fetus, but on the other hand, the cessation in the monthly cycle provides more blood to the mother.  Thus, under normal circumstances, pregnancy should not cause a healthy woman any problems.  However, if a woman has a pre-existing deficiency, then problems may develop because the weakness could be heightened.

Every phase of pregnancy is supported with acupuncture and integrative medicine from the first tri-semester to enhancing a smooth delivery.    Acupuncture has successfully treated morning sickness, abdominal pain, urination issues and constipation as well as prevention of threatened miscarriage.  Acupuncture is also useful for delayed labor and mal-positioning of the baby.

Menopause Discomfort

Menopause is a natural stage of life for every woman. Traditional Chinese medicine are excellent at facilitating a smooth transition. By bringing balance and harmony to the body, they can effectively treat the discomforting symptoms of hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, headaches and insomnia. Through an integrative approach, the body’s hormonal, endocrine and organ systems can be nourished and balanced, so that the innate wisdom of the body can express itself. The aim is not to replace estrogen, but to allow this natural process to happen smoothly and to bring about a renewed balance to the hormones.

Endometriosis

The hallmark symptom of endometriosis is chronic pelvic pain especially during menstruation and may include pain during ovulation, heavy periods, spotting before the period, pain during intercourse and infertility. In endometriosis, the endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus. Like the endometrium inside the uterus, this tissue responds to hormones, especially estrogen, growing and shrinking cyclically. Unlike the endometrium, this misplaced tissue has no pathway out of the body resulting in pain from the stagnation and often inflammation.

Asian medicine views endometriosis primarily as a condition of blood stagnation.   Acupuncture and herbal medicine can help clear inflammation, improve blow flow in the pelvic region, strengthen the immune system, balance hormones and activate the body’s detoxification process to break down estrogen.

Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome

PCOS is a complex syndrome of hormonal and metabolic disturbances presenting with anovulation, menstrual irregularities, polycystic ovaries, excessive androgens, insulin resistance and infertility. Asian medicine views PCOS as a multi-organ imbalance of excess and deficiencies with an underlying Kidney Yang deficiency due to the genetic component of PCOS.   Acupuncture and herbal medicine can assist in balancing the hormones to restore ovulation and the menstrual cycle and help regulate blood sugar, stimulate weight loss and promote a healthy metabolism.
